Swords Oxygen Centre are delighted to be able to offer our clients the opportunity to experience oxygen therapy sessions in our hyperbaric chamber, one of only a small number in Ireland. Although oxygen therapy can really help in recovering from illness and injury, it’s also a great way to improve your general wellbeing.

How does it work?

Hyperbaric chambers like ours were originally developed for scuba divers suffering from nitrogen bubbles in the blood, also known as “the bends”. It was soon realised, however, that sitting in a high-pressure chamber breathing pure oxygen was hugely beneficial in getting oxygen-rich plasma to parts of the body where it was needed and could help treat all kinds of conditions.

Highly-oxygenated blood can reduce inflammations in the body meaning it’s helpful for a very wide range of conditions from asthma to arthritis. That highly-oxygenated blood can help prevent tissue death caused by injuries or from non-healing wounds like gangrene or diabetic ulcers. It promotes the formation of new collagen and connective tissues and can help to ward-off infections. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is commonly used by sports-people as part of rehab and recovery from injuries.

What can be treated with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has long been known to be useful in treating a wide range of conditions. Some of the conditions it’s used for including some that we’ve treated first-hand are:

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can help relieve some of the symptoms of Long COVID like fatigue, muscle aches and lung issues.

  • Musculoskeletal injuries

Oxygen Therapy is often used for rehab when it comes to sports injuries or for damage to muscles, tendons, joints, ligaments and even broken bones.

  • Asthma

Time spent in the Hyperbaric Chamber can help ease some asthma symptoms allowing you to breathe free and easy again.

  • Arthritis

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can reduce the pain and stiffness associated with Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis.

What else can be treated with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can also be effective in treating:

  • Anaemia

What happens during a session in our hyperbaric chamber?

Following a consultation with Bernard, the client sits into the chamber and lies down. The door is shut and all the client has to do is relax and breathe the pure oxygen through either a mask or nosepiece. The chamber is large enough that it can easily accommodate a parent with a child at the same time. The client is constantly monitored and can communicate with Bernard by an intercom in the chamber. If the client wishes to exit the chamber before the treatment is finished (if they’re feeling claustrophobic, for instance), it can be opened from the inside.

The chamber is disinfected after every use and new disposable face masks are provided so that sessions are entirely COVID-safe.
